AN IMPROVEMENT of 8 per cent in bus journey time—that was the result achieved when a new Transport and Road Research Laboratory computer program designed to regulate traffic lights was tried out in Glasgow.
Mr D. I. Robinson and Mr R. A. Vincent—joint authors of TRRL Report 666—estimate that the use of their "Bus transyt" program may bring community benefits of 000,000 when applied to urban areas similar in size and character to Glasgow.
The program calculates the traffic signal time settings necessary to minimise total passenger delay. By this means buses are automatically given priority over other vehicles.
