• A proposal to increase the annual vehicle test fee by £2.30 to £34.70 has gone out to consultation again.
The Department of Transport proposal is due to come into effect on 2 November. It represents a 7.1% increase and retains the structure of a fiat fee.
This is the second consultation on the subject of test fees this summer: it will last until 28 September.
A proposed axle surcharge of £7.50 was dropped in the face of protests from the Freight Transport Association and the Road Haulage Association.
Just over 5% of the latest proposed rise is attributed to the increased cost of the exhaust emmission test which became law on 1 September.
The remaining rise is said to be needed to cover the cost of the increased number of multiaxled vehicles which are being tested.
