• The Italian Road Haulage Federation (FM) has warned that the recently-extended weekend ban on heavy goods vehicles could spark off an explosion of protests among Italian drivers which could present a threat to public order.
The Federation has also called for special provisions for foreign drivers to prevent them being stranded in Italy as a result of an extended ban.
FM was referring to the decision to set the start of the ban as early as 06:00 on Friday at certain peak August weekends and from 14:00 Friday on others, to avoid traffic pile-ups during the height of the holiday period.
FM says public order could be threatened by the anger resulting from a ban that "not only blocked vehicles but segregated human beings".
"All this could lead to demonstrations and excesses which could be avoided if Italy adopts provisions that other European countries already have," it says.
