nESIGNED to conform with the pro

posed new Construction and Use Regulations relating to heavy goods vehicles, a new Scammell articulated unit will, so far as is known at present, be the only '24-ton eight-wheeler to be exhibited at the Commercial Motor _Show this year. The vehicle is built to take advantage of the intended 9-tonper-axle allowance and is 8 ft. wide, with an overall length of 35 ft.

The 15-ton motive unit is basically 'similar to that employed with current 22-ton outfits, but has been fitted with larger tyres and has a re-styled cab and sheet-metal work. The model to be exhibited is powered by a Gardner 61W oil engine developing 112 b.h.p. at 1,700 r.p.m. and 358 lb.-ft. torque at 1.300 r.p.m.

Alternatively, a Scammell-Meadows oil engine can be supplied. This develops 125 b.h.p. at 1,750 r.p.m., with a maximum torque output of 420 lb.-ft. at 1,000 r.p.m.

The six-speed constant-mesh gearbox is a standard unit and has a 1.5 to 1 overdrive-top gear ratio. It is mounted independently in the chassis and drives the spiral-bevel and epicyclic doublereduction rear axle through a short propeller shaft. Air brakes are fitted, and there is a two-way valve to vary the operating pressure for light and laden running conditions.

A Spherub turntable is employed for the trailer attachment. This is a new component in which the turntable and k Mg-post are insulated from the chassis frame by' two, bonded-rubber cushions. Full articulation is' allowed and because there are no metal-to-metal contacts, wear is much reduced..

Limiting stops are fitted and the complete assembly is housed within the frame side members, thereby simplifying removal. A fully automatic coupling is also to be made available. ,The semi-trailer is 25 ft. long and has the newly developed parallel-link bogie. This bogie increases the braking efficiency of the semi-trailer by eliminating weight transference during braking. Pan hard rods to each axle cut out any side loading on the suspension springs, thus the springs are used only for load carrying and do not take side and braking stresses.

Better insulation, larger doors and a more modem appearance are features of the new cab. It can be supplied with a heater and demister unit, and fresh air is drawn in through louvres in the near side of the bonnet. Flush-mounted head and side lamps, flat-topped front wings and a tapering bonnet give, a "new look" to the Scammell without reducing engine accessibility.

The first vehicle, built to the order of the Ever Ready Co. (Gt. Britain Ltd., has 10.00-20-in. tyres on all wheel but larger-section single tyres may fitted to the driving and trailer axles.

A Constructor long-wheelbase 6 by load carrier will also be seen on tf Scammell stand. This is a left-ham drive vehicle suitable for a gross weigl chF. 33 tons. The three driving axi. have been greatly strengthened situ this model was introduced and the re4 bogie is a parallel-link unit similar • that used on Scammell semi-trailers.

Michelin G.20 metallic tyres are fittt and full oilfields equipment will 1 exhibited, including a 50,000-1b. wine a tail roller and gin poles. The vehic is powered by a Rolls-Royce C6NF oil engine, with a built-in oil cooler at pressurized radiator.

Recent modifications to the Scars three-wheeled tractors include a-light radiator with rubber-mounted tubes, smaller battery of the same capacit and the replacement of magneto ignitit by coil and distributor equipment. Clayton Dewandre vacuum servo is no fitted to the 3-ton tractor.
