THE activities of the Negotiating

HE

of the National Association of Tyre Specialists was reviewed at the annual general meeting of the Association, held recently in London.

This committee was formed for the purpose of trying to right some of the anomalies created by Tyre Directorate and, what was more important, to stop any furthelControl Orders being imposed before , the Association had had an •opportunify of discussing the ,necessity of further curtailments being imposed on an industry which was doing good work in the conservation of rubber The subjects of the use of part-worn tyres and the ,appointing of casing collectors to deal with the Government dumps, were taken up by the committee. So .far as part-worn tyres was concerned, .it seemed that anything in the nature of used-tyre depots were very unwelcome at Tyre Directorate.

In the matter of tyre re-grooving,' the Negotiating Committee challenged the

recommended Order which sought to ban re-grooving...Certain facts were brought to the notice of Tyre Directorate, relative to the economies attendant upon the process and, as a result,re-grooving was still permitted.

The Negotiating Committee believed that the utmost endeavours would still' have -to be made to Lain for members of the Association 'their rightful share in the discussions of post-war plans for the distribution.' service and 'maintenance of motor tyres.

During the "meeting Mr. E. W Orchard, the newly elected chairman, brought to the notice of members the booklet, "How to PreVent Tyre Misuse," published by "The Commercial Motor."

Special attention was called to the matter dealing with re-grooving, Mr. Orchard remarking that the probable acute shortage of tyres during the next six montlis would bring the process to the fore, With regard to the post-war position, the chairman said that the " favoured few " must not be allowed to dominate the industry by means of monopoly or

bureaucratic control. On the other hand there would have to be swim form of regulation -within the industry, to prevent cut-throat competitidn and other abuses.
