the clear market leader, currently commanding a 50% market share. It's cheap to buy (£12,000), easy to repair, and there are 1.8 million of them trundling along Russia's roads. But domestic van buyers' tastes are changing, and the antiquated Gazelle is beginning to lose sales to Western manufacturers such as Fiat, Mercedes and Volkswagen. In an attempt to protect its market share GAZ has launched a pricier, upmarket van. The Gazelle Next is £4,200 dearer than the standard Gazelle (which remains in production), but for the extra money van buyers get a far more modern van with a 120hp Cummins diesel engine, ZF manual transmission, and a three-year, 150,000km warranty.
