As minibus operators we sometimes provide a box for elderly people to step on so that they can reach the bottom step of the vehicle.
Is it legal to use a box for this purpose?
The use of a box as a step to assist passengers boarding a bus does not contravene any transport law.
To minimise any risk we suggest you ensure that the box is strong enough to carry a heavy person and does not have a slippery surface; it should have a base large enough to avoid it toppling over; and it should be easily seen so that people do not trip over it.
Failure to ensure that the box is safe could result in an action for negligence in the case of an accident.
