/ Northern Western LA Martin Albu has regm! served his de
cision on a bid by J Irlam & Sons to increase its vehicle authority, following objections from Macclesfield Borough Council, The company had applied to increase its authorisation from 40 vehicles and 70 trailers to 60 vehicles and 100 trailers to based at The Cold Store, Chelford, Cheshire.
John Knight, Assistant Planning Officer for Macclesfield Borough Council maintained that the site was not adequate to park the extra vehicles and trailers. He said the council felt Irlam's business had outgrown its present site and should be moved: the extra vehicles would have a detrimental effect on the residents in the village and the green belt surrounding the operating centre.
Ron Simpson of Macclesfield's engineering department said that many of the parking spaces on a map produced by the firm could not be accepted because vehicles would have to be placed like jigsaw pieces and he did not accept that the vehicles could manoeuvre in and out of the spaces shown.
Company director David Irlam said the increased authorisation was needed to cope with extra work. Most vehicles were on the road for up to five nights a week — Christmas Day would be the only day when all the vehicles would be at the operating centre, and even then about half the trailers would be at customers' premises.
Restrictive conditions suggested by the council would close the firm down altogether.
