A LICENSING system should be introduced for ferry routes on Scotland's west coast and to the Northern Isles, according to the Freight Transport Association.
Commenting on the Government's proposals for the gradual ntroduction of road equivalent :ariff subsidies on these ser/ices, the ETA pointed out that ?very care should be taken to insure that there is no loss of ifficiency.
"To achieve the Government's )bjective of maintaining the surtival and prosperity of island :ommunities, reduced fares rust be accompanied by the :orrect frequency and service ram the ferry operators that )est serves the needs of the isand communities," it said.
It has recommended that a orm of tendering for licences be ntroduced, especially in view of he problems which have arisen n the light of Caledonian Mac3rayne's loss of subsidy for its ;ervice between Gourock and )unoon.
