LUCAS SYALON Ltd, a n company, has been formed b Lucas Industries to exploit a advanced ceramic material d veloped by scientists at the Lu cas research centre and the Uri* versity of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Called Syalon ceramic, th new material is claimed to hay a toughness and thermal resis tance which gives it immens scope for use in high-stress en gineering applications.
According to Lucas, Syalo ceramic has been used extensi vely as a cutting tool tip, where has out-performed competin materials on a wide range o metals including steel, cast iro and aerospace alloys, like nickel alloy and titanium.
Lucas claims that the qualitiel of Syalon ceramic open the wai for many other uses, particularl) as a manufacturing material fo high-performance diesel engin( and gas-turbine components.
