trucks on one site

DAF DEALERSHIP Watts is to concentrate all its used truck activities on a main road site in Worcester. Just two miles from Junction 7 on the M5, the Bath Road, Broomhall, location is carrying an initial stock of 20 vehicles.

At present, Watts is doing especially well with 430hp 85CF Space Cab 6x2 tractor units. says used truck sales manager Mike Curtis. "There's still a demand for 4x2s though, and we've sold quite a few recently," he adds.

"Eighteen-tonne curtainsiders are moving OK, as are 18-tonne skip loaders and tippers with grabs on," he says. "There's far less interest in 18-tonne boxes though.

"There's also plenty of interest in six and eight-wheel tippers for use on muckaway work, just so long as they're clean and tidy."

SO far as age is concerned, anything dated before 2(X)) is no longer considered desirable. Curtis contends. "If I'm offered apart-exchange that's older than that then I try to get it underwritten before negotiating a deal, but these days a lot of traders don't want to k now," he says.

Why not dismantle those older trucks and se the spares, an activity Watts has been involved in? -The trouble is that fewer and fewer operators arc running trucks that use the parts concerned," he replies.

-It's certainly noticeable that operators will favour a truck with a 51 plate over one with a Y plate," Curtis continues. "They won't necessarily pay more for it, but if you put two identical trucks side-by-side, the one with the 51 plate will be the one that's picked."

Looking forward to 2006, the advent of Euro4 could be especially good news for late-plate Euro-3 tractor units, he suggests. Customers wary of new technology may decide to opt for what they know and buy late used rather than new; leaving other operators to find out what SCR and EGR mean in practice.
