THIRTY-EIGHT tonnes is the optimum weight for lorries in Britain, Transport Minister Lynda Chalker said this week.

She told CM at the Road Haulage Association's annual conference in Malta that "there is no prospect of an increase in weights" and said she was surprised that operators still held out hopes for higher weights.
