LOTHIAN'S bus services would be drastically affected by the Government plans for deregulation, said Terry Weir, convener of the busmen's branch of the Transport and General Workers Union recently.
Under the plan, he said, only the most popular — and therefore profitable — routes would be allowed to operate. Less-used routes which provided a vital service to the community would be killed off because they could not operate without subsidies, he added.
He estimated that 50 per cent of Edinburgh's bus services would disappear. Country bus routes would be affected even more, because they relied so heavily on subsidies.
The union would be approaching the Scottish TUC to organise a national campaign.
