BEDFORD

Stands J1, J2, J3, J4, JS and at SMT Sales and Service, 205 Finnieston Street, Glasgow.

ALTHOUGH there is only one vehicle which could be called a psv on the combined Bedford Stand — the Equipage ''mobile lounge" — there are examples of Bedford-based psv at the SMT Sales and Service of 205 Finnieston Street, Glasgow.

The Equipage made its debut at the Frankfurt Show this year and is a luxury executive passenger vehicle for seven, based around the CF, The Equipage is equipped with such exterior features as cast alloy wheels, an air dam and flared wheel arches. Inside there is air conditioning, TV and a refrigerator.

Powered by a 2.3-litre, ohc petrol engine the Equipage is expected to sell for around £12,000 in limited numbers.

The true Bedford psv show is at the SMT show rooms. Two YMT's, one with a Duple Dominant 53-seater body and the other with a Plaxton Supreme 53-seater, are alongside two YLQs. These also have Dominant and Supreme bodies but are 45-seaters. Again Plaxton and Duple bodies are fitted to the two PJK chassis and they are each 29-seaters.

Three CF conversions are on show. The first is the Plaxton Mini Supreme and two have a 17-seat capacity, the other being a Reebur 17. Last of the CF's is a 12-seat Dormobile psv conversion.

Tricentror's chassis conversions of the YLQ Duple 35seater are there along with a Bedford JJL Minibus.

A free regular minibus service is being operated from the Kelvin Hall to the SMT premises.

DAF

Stand 9, Partick Transport Depot DAF Trucks (GB) Ltd, Marlow, Bucks, SL7 1LW THE FIRST right-hand-drive DAF SB 2000 for the UK is on show at the Partick Transport Depot. Shown with 12m (40ft) Plaxton bodywork which has seating capacity for 53 people the DAF has a rear-mounted 8.25 litre diesel. Both charge cooled and turbocharged, the vertically mounted engine gives out 172kW 230bhp) at 2400rpm and maximum torque is 776Nm (572Ibft).

The engine has a cross-flow water system with twin thermostats and an oil cooler/heat exchanger. Transmission is the ZF S6-60 six-speed synchromesh box. The DAF is the first of 25 to be imported into the UK for next season.

DEVON

Stands 18 and 19, Partick Transport Depot Morrisons Central Garage Ltd, Stirling ONE 12-SEATER minibus conversion of the old VW type 2 transporter by Devon Conversions of Sidmouth, Devon, is on display next to examples of the company's motor caravans. Fittted with either the 1.6 or twolitre flat-four engine, it has sliding doors on both sides.

FORD

Stand R1, S & N Motors, . 2275 London Road, Glasgow ONLY ONE EXAMPLE of Ford's heaviest bus/coach chains is on show at Kelvin Hall this year. Powered by the six-litre turbo II engine, the model on display is an R 1014 converted to 3.86m 152in) wheelbase by Tricentrol Chassis Developments and has Duple executive coach 100kW at 2400rpm (134b and maximum turque is 443 (327Ibft) at 1800rprn.

Ford's own 6-600 -S speed all synchromesh bo; used with an Eaton 1 71 00 t 195 rear axle. Extra features include a viscous fan and a noloss cooling system.

LEYLAND

Stands Ml, M2, M6, M7, MB Leyland Vehicles, Lancaster House, Leyland, Preston, PR5 1SN.

MAKING ITS DEBUT at Kelvin Hall is the Leyland Cub bus chassis. Aimed at the 23-33 passenger vehicle market, the vehicle is developed from the Leyland Terrier truck. It is intended for light-duty stage carriage, as a small coach, a school bus or for welfare and associated applications.

Leyland says that high durability and reliability has been achieved using well proved components from the truck range. Additionally, parts rationalisation across the Terrier-Cub range will, says Leyland, result in competitive pricing for such a high specification.

The first UK showing for the Leyland National 2 is at Kelvin Hall this year. Changes were made to the original Leyland design after complaints from operators. Also on show in the UK for the first time is the Leopard heavy-weight coach-bus chassis fitted with the ZF gearbox.

VOLVO

Stand M4, Volvo Trucks and Buses, Kilwinning Road, Irvine, Ayrshire ALTHOUGH only one exhibit will be on the stand, Volvo has arranged demonstrations of

others at the Volvo Barr-head location. The stand model is a

B58 chassis, 12m (40ft) long, which is fitted with a ZF gearbox and air suspension. Volvo's TH D 100 power unit, with a capacity of 9.6 litres (590cuin), produces 165kW (230bhp) at 2200 rpm. Maximum torque is 831 Nrn (5131 lbft).

Four other 858s are available for demonstration. One is a 12m with a Plaxton Supreme executive body ZF gearbox and air suspension, while another with • Plaxton Supreme bodywork features air suspension and automatic transmission. Another with automatic (Allison transmission is used), has a Duple Dominant body.

The coach line-up is completed by a Duple Dominant II bodied B58 with ZF box and leaf springs.

Last of the demonstration vehicles is a Volvo B55 double decker with a 79-seater Alexander body. Finished in Central SMT livery it is the first to have a Voith gearbox in the Scottish bus group. It will work mostly on the Kilbride/Glasgow route.

WALTER ALEXANDER

Stand Q2 Walter Alexander & Co (Coachbuilders) Ltd, 91 Glasgow Road, Falkirk, FK1 4JB.

THIS SCOTTISH coachbuilder is showing one of three double-deck bodies for the Scottish Bus Group on Metrobus underframes. Alexanders are the first bodybuilders other than MetroCarnmel-Weymann themselves to build Metro buses.

Designed to have a minimum overall height of 4.2m (13ft 10in) with a "straight" rear axle, the body is built from • aluminium alloy extrusions of Alexanclers' own design. Extensive use has been made of grp on the front and rear panels and domes and the wheelboxes and staircase. A hay width of 1.6m (5ft 4_5in) is used instead of the more normal 1.2m (3ft 11 in) or 2.39m (7ft 10in).
