BOTH the Ministry of Trans port and the Chartered In stitute of Transport were es tablished 60 years ago and so i was appropriate that Normal Fowler, Minister of Transport should be the guest of honoul at the 60th anniversar3 luncheon of the CIT at th( Connaught Rooms, London on Tuesday. He wished th( Institute success and pros perity.
His approach to transport he said, reflected Governmerr thinking, giving, one, priorit5 to the needs of the customei and, two, scrutinizing the rol( of Government and seeking E bigger role for private enter. prise, at the same time pro. tecting the environment ant promoting safety.
Long-distance coaching was one area in which there was no need to keep control over competition. The Government had to have less influence over the way the transport industry developed. The Institute had a fine record and he looked forward to working with it in the months ahead.
The CIT president, Dr Liam St. J. Devlin, said there had been a close relationship between the Ministry and the CIT since the beginning. The Institute represented a connecting link between Government and industry. He forecast a greater future ahead.
