Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FODEN'S have told CM this week that they definitely have no plans to cease production of their worm-drive axle units (CM Technical News October 19).

But gearbox manufacture is• to be phased out progressively and proprietory gearboxes bought in.

Haulmaster 8 x 4 rigids and the export-winning Super Haulmaster are fitted with the Foden worm-drive axle and this will continue to be the case, says Fodens.

Fodens also points out that the worm-drive axle is not as frictionally wasteful as might be supposed.

With an efficiency of 96 per cent it is 0.5 per cent less efficient than a hypoid axle and 1 per cent less efficient that a spiral bevel.

Also, says Fodens, the worm-drive unit is stronger than a spiral bevel and does not require the accurate setting-up of a hypoid.

Finally, the company told CM that worm-drive axles are more tolerant to shock loading and general transmission abuse.
