WHEN the Public Works Exhibition opens at Olympia, London, on Monday the 400 exhibitors will have plenty to interest both civil and structural engineers and local authorities. Exhibits range from lorrymounted equipment and refuse collection vehicles down to hydraulic hose couplings.
Centrax Gears Ltd is displaying a new range of axles which are available in four basic sizes. The new planetary axles, built for highway use and industrial vehicles, have been designed following a comprehensive survey of customer requirements.
Russian trucks New exhibits sure to attract a great deal of attention are the Belaz dump trucks from Russia. The 45-ton truck, seen for the first time in Britain, is powered by a V12 turbocharged engine developing 520 bhp at 2100 rpm and has a struck capacity of 27.5 cu yd and a heaped capacity of 34.6 cu yd. The cab is pressurized for dust exclusion and is sound proofed, The 584 has an overall length of 26ft 7in., is 12ft 5in, wide, and has a wheelbase of 13ft 9in.; ground clearance is lft 6in. and the overall height with the body tipped is 25ft.
Other models on display are the 540 dump truck which has 30-ton capacity at 20 cu metres; the 256 B model with 15-ton capacity and 10 cu metres which is powered with a V8 engine developing 265 bhp. Also on show for the first time is the Belaz B98 Grader powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine.
Dorman Diesels Ltd is exhibiting a full range of engines but pride of place is being given to its two latest models, the 8FT and the 8JT which have just been released and are rated at 221 bhp at 2200 rpm and 282 at 2000 rpm respectively. Both engines are four-stroke diesel injection water-cooled units, based on the V8 principle.
SLD Olding is displaying its new Haulamatic 6-15 dump truck for the first time. This vehicle has been constructed for both onand off-road operation. The main construction is of high-tensile steel and standard equipment includes six-speed automatic transmission, fail-safe dual air-brakes, exhaust-heated tapered body and power-assisted steering. It is powered by a Perkins V8 510 engine coupled to an Allison MT41 automatic transmission with six forward ratios giving a maximum speed of 39 mph. Traction on difficult sites is assisted through a bogie which permits parallel displacement of the rear wheels of 10.5in. and a diagonal displacement of 15in. The struck capacity of the body is 10.7 cu yd.
Lorry-mounted cranes
Colchester Tillage Ltd is displaying three lorry-mounted cranes with lifting capacities of 224-cwt, 24cwt and 3 tons. The cranes will slew 360 degrees in either direction, and an in-built hydraulically operated winch is an optional extra. They can be mounted directly behind the cab, half-way along the vehicle body or at the end of the body, but provision has also been made for units with detachable mountings.
Coles Cranes Ltd is showing the latest addition to its range of truck-mounted cranes. The Hydra Truck 13/17T has a capacity of 131 tons and is mounted on a purpose-built chassis which incorporates hydraulically operated outriggers. Chassis are available in either 4x2 or 4x4 configuration.
Sheppard Equipment Ltd is showing for the first time its Mark III Meiller unit which incorporates many features which its predecessors do not have. Its combined power take-off and pump is, the company claims, a prime safety feature. The unit also incorporates a new hydraulic pump and secondary controls designed to speed operation.
Ford commercials The Ford Motor Co Ltd will have five commercial vehicles on show. They are a Transit 175 demountable mobile workshop from Dormobile, a D1614 tipping chassis with an Edbro Duo-Loader, a D2214 ThompsonStetter truckmixer, a Transtrend tipping refuse collector based on a Transit 115 and a D1210 Liftec hydraulic platform. The Duo-Loader is mounted on a 147in.-wheelbase and the main skip has a capacity of 11+ cu yd. The truck mixer uses the same wheelbase on a DT2214 6x4 tandem-axle chassis. Smaller local authorities still tend to prefer side-loading refuse collection vehicles and the Transtrend has been designed to meet their demands. It has a 3 cu yd capacity, is side-loaded and mounted on 106in.-wheelbase.
Dennis Brothers Ltd expect its "mini" refuse collector, the new Alley Cat, to attract a lot of attention. It is mounted on a 6ft 6in.-wide custom-built chassis and has been specifically designed for work in back streets and rural areas.

There are two Musketeer refuse collectors; a Bin Master collector; a Dodge sludge tanker, a Karrier gulley-emptier and a Dodge /Multilift tipper or container handling unit. The Multilift has a 12-ton capacity. The two Karrier Musketeers are fitted with Glover, Webb and Liversidge continuous-loading bodies — the 19/60 is constructed for horizontal discharge, the 15 /45 for tipper discharge.
Rubery Owen will have on display the Owen 85 Low-Loader Trailer. This has been constructed to allow equipment to be driven straight on to the platform no matter how confined the operating space. It incorporates a fixed ramp but can also be used in conjunction with skidded plant.
Fodens Ltd will be exhibiting the 6x6 concrete mixer chassis which is fitted with a Gardner 6LX diesel engine and the Foden 12-speed gearbox, but the eight-speed box is offered as an option. The front axle has a capacity of 6.5 tons and the rear bogie a 20-ton capacity.

The Vacu-Lug Tyre Organization — a group of companies which specializes in the reconditioning and repairing of off-the-road tyres is featuring a complete range of off-highway equipment and remould tyres. Two items will be on display for the first time the R16, a steel-cord-radial truck remould cover, and the Mortread, an off-the-road remould which was introduced earlier this year.
The R16 has a depth tread of 16mm and it is claimed that the broader, flatter profile together with the narrower tread grooves ensure excellent stability and traction. These covers are available in sizes D20/100-20 and D225 /11-22.5.
The Mortread which has a square profile and heavy shoulders, is produced in two sizes at 1200-24 and 1500-20 and is available in 14 different tread patterns.
