Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE FIRM had lost approximately f9,000 worth of business because chemicals increasingly were being delivered in bulk, claimed Jones Bros., (Widnes) Ltd., in Liverpool last week.

It was applying to the North Western deputy LA, Mr. A. H. Jolliffe, for three tankers on B licence to carry liquids in bulk for ICI Ltd., Laporte Industries Ltd. and Albright and Wilson Manufacturing Ltd. within 250 miles. Three Blicensed vehicles and one A (all flats) were to be surrendered. Pickfords Ltd. objected to the application.

A director of Jones Bros., Mr. T. Jones, claimed that all were long-standing customers who would give him the work, if the licences were granted, which he had formerly carried on flat vehicles. ICI favoured tankers on contract but required six vehicles at once and his company could not raise the necessary capital, he said.

Mr. Jolliffe felt the applicant was entitled to meet his customer's requirements and to keep abreast of handling methods. Only letters had been submitted in support but he felt that if he granted two tankers the firm would not be competing with tanker traffic generally because of its restricted conditions.

• MR. PETER WALKER, MP, Conservative shadow Transport Minister will be principal guest at the annual dinner of the RHA Central London sub-area at Grosvenor House on November 24.
