THE haulage shop stewards' campaign against the Minister of Transport's proposals to reduce the working week gained momentum this week. Shop stewards of TGWU and SCMU met in Glasgow on Sunday to decide what action they would take following a letter from Mr. A. Kitson, SCMU general secretary, outlawing the campaign. A reply has now been sent to Mr. Kitson, asking what the unions are doing at area level.
There will be a further meeting of the stewards on November 18 in Glasgow to discuss Mr. Kitson's expected reply. It is understood that, dependent on the reply, Mr. Kitson and Mr. W. Hanton (TGWU) will be invited to meet the stewards to discuss the matter.
In the meantime the petition (CM, October 20) which is circulating the haulage industry is gaining strength each week. A spokesman for the stewards said this week: "This is our livelihood we are defending and we want to know who our union officials are supporting—us or Mrs. Castle. If they are working for us in this matter we are entitled to know what is happening and they've had plenty of time to tell us."
