HARD on the heels of last week's summary of how hauliers' profits were declining, given in evidence to the Prices and Incomes Board (CM, November 3) the Road Haulage Association has now revealed more detail about the figures involved.
The figures are taken from a detailed inquiry into 10 road haulage businesses by the Centre for Interfirm Comparisons Ltd., on the RHA's behalf. And the inquiry reveals that although revenue and capital investment in haulage have increased fairly steadily in total over the past five years, the total profit earned in the past financial year has declined sharply-in absolute terms-compared with the previous year.
Firms investigated represented several different sections of the industry; their fleets ranged from seven to 70 vehicles; their total revenue in the past financial year was almost £1.5m; and the total value of assets employed was just over £1m.
In the tables on this page, the first two give details for each of the firms separately; year five is the past financial year, and years six and seven are projected, while figures in brackets show a loss. The third table gives weighted averages for 10 firms (A2 is omitted because first-year figures were not available).
