Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Two such devices are the Hope and the Adrolic stabilizer.

The Hope device comprises a multi-disc friction unit controlled through the braking system airline via a pressure-reducing valve which converts the line pressure to a maximum of 25 psi.

The casing of the unit is bolted into the turret of the fifth-wheel above the rubbing plate and the moving plates of the unit are splined to the kingpin which can revolve in a bearing through the rubbing plate. A heavy tab is welded to the shoulders of the kingpin and this locates between the leader ramps of the actual fifth-wheel, so turning the kingpin and the friction plates when the tractive unit moves relative to the trailer.

Application of the footbrake applies pressure on the operating cylinder, so braking the movement of the kingpin within the turret. This reduces the likelihood of a jacknife by converting the articulation of the outfit into a semi-rigid unit.

The Adrolic stabilizer, which has been on the market for many years, is a hydraulic ram embodying air pressure of vacuum-controlled shut-off valve at either end of the doubleacting piston.

Application of the brakes closes the by-pass valves at either end of the cylinder whereby the piston is prevented from moving along the cylinder walls in either direction. To mount this unit one end of the cylinder is fixed to the front framework of the semi-trailer while the protruding end of the ram is fixed to the chassis of the tractive unit in a diagonal manner. It will be seen, therefore, that this device completely locks the two halves of the outfit together.

It must be emphasized that neither of these devices will completely eliminate jacknifing because there are many factors that are outside the control of persons responsible for designing, maintaining, or driving vehicles.

There is no substitute for the highly skilled and enthusiastic artic driver. No matter how highly skilled a man might be, unless he enjoys the job he is doing he may not pay sufficient attention to finding the answer to these problems as they arise on his daily round.
