Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Portable welding set

THE ADAMP, a portable welding set with a current range of 10 to 400 amp is now made by Bowthorpe Line Equipment Ltd. Current selection can be made in 10 amp steps by closing a combination of switches and a vernier control gives a further 0 to 10 amp range, offering infinite control of welding current through the whole range.

The unit is suitable for 2, 3, 6 or 12 operators ant by means of easily removable reactors and switches additional components can be fitted to extend the current range.

• The set measures 1ft 10in, by lft 10in. by 2ft 7in. It is mounted on wheels—two at the rear and a swivelling pair at the front—and total weight is 5931b. The wheels are detachable enabling up to three units to be stacked.

The Adamp can operate stick electrodes of all the sizes now available including coated mild steel, stainless steel, special-alloy steel, iron powder, low hydrogen, nickel alloy and hard facing.

Needle rollers

NEEDLE-ROLLER bearings are now being manufactured by The Skefko Ball Bearing Co. Ltd.

Two types of drawn-cup bearing are available—type BN has a closed end and type BR has an open end. Sizes range from 0.25in. to 1.5in. shaft diameter and there are various widths; the bearings are dimensionally interchangeable with the majority of drawn-cup needle-roller bearings currently in use.

A novel feature of the new Skefko bearings is the construction of the cage from glassreinforced graphite-impregnated nylon. Skefko claims that this material gives a better strength-to-weight ratio than steel. It is also corrosion resistant and the graphite impregnation contributes to a low coefficient of friction.

Vacuum lifting

A RANGE of vacuum lifting attachments is produced by VEB Hema-Werk Luisenthal, East Germany, which is being offered to the UK market under the reciprocal trade agreement.

The equipment is available with capacities of 2.5 tons to 5 tons and can be used to lift any type of load with a suitable surface such as metal plates and slabs, tubing and vessels, reinforced concrete slabs, rock and stone, plate glass and plastics and timber building elements.

Having four or eight suction pads, the attachment can be manoeuvred and operated by a mobile-crane driver; suckingdown occupies only 5sec and the load is released in 3/5sec. The basic 2.5-ton lifter is equipped with four suction pads of 22in. diameter which can be arranged for spans of 44.3in. and 104.6in., extension beams being available in three lengths to give spans up to 240.4in. Fitted with the longest beam the lifter weighs 7721b.

The 5-ton lifter comprises two 2.5-ton units and weighs 1,7201b. The outer suction pads can span between 107.3in. and 277.8in.

Anti-corrosion additive

DEVELOPED for use in all forms of internal-combustion engine cooling systems, Fernox G20 an anti-corrosion additive from Industrial (Anti-corrosion) Services, is available in packs ranging from 5oz capacity to 561b.

It is added in quantities of 2oz per gal of coolant and it is claimed to produce minute whiskers having some thermal conductivity, onto the inner surfaces of water passages. This is to facilitate heat dispersal and completely avoid the formation of local hot spots. The additive is compatible with antifreeze, and has no detrimental effect on either water-pump bearings or impellers. It also gives protection to rubber water-hoses and is harmless to aluminium. Being free of chromates, the additive is safe to handle. Made by: Industrial (Anti-Corrosion) Services, Britannia House, 214-224 High Street, Waltham Cross, Herts.

Price: 5oz pack 9s 6d (other size prices on request to makers).

Useful conveyor

A TELESCOPING CONVEYOR now available from Dexion Ltd. consists of three 10ft sections of gravity-wheel conveyor which will extend from 11ft 10in. to 29ft 6in. The width of the conveyor is 18in. and a wheel pattern giving 32 wheels per foot enables the conveyor to handle packages as small as 9in. long and loads of up to 601b per foot.

Each of the 10ft sections of wheel conveyor will hinge in either direction so that the conveyor can be swung around obstructions. A special roller connection ensures perfect tracking of goods even when the conveyor is swung through 75 deg.

The conveyor is adjustable for height so that the slope can be tailored to suit the particular type of goods handled. Large rubber-tyred castors are fitted with locks at each end to provide a firm location for the conveyor when in use.
