ASKELETAL BTC tandem-axle semi-trailer for 28-32 tons gross operation has been introduced for container work by the British Trailer Co. Ltd., Trafford Park, Manchester. The company has been producing skeletals for several years now, using its Four-in-Line twin-oscillating-axle running gear.
The tandem-axle model of skeletal trailer has quick-action ISO-pattern fastenings to suit 20ft or 301t containers on the one chassis. To allow the container to sit squarely on the trailer frame as low as possible, the intermediate fastenings are of a special design with removable locking pin so as to leave the top of the frame flush.
When not in use these detachable locking spindles are stowed by the side of the fastening housing in the ends of the outriggers and are held in place by a location pin. This same location pin holds the locking spindle to the operating handle when the spindle has been dropped in the fastening socket for picking up one of the shorter containers.
Merely turning the operating handle through 90 degrees is sufficient to hold a container rigidly to the skeletal trailer. A driver can tell from a glance at the handle positions whether the fastenings are turned properly. Fastenings for Freightliner containers can also be incorporated in the skeletal trailer specification.
The trailer frame has 16in-deep I-beam side-members which are boxed and have their bottom flanges flitched over the necked portion above the fifth-wheel coupling and back to just past the landing legs.
Also new from a BTC company: custombuilt ISO containers are being offered by Samlesbury Engineering (1961) Ltd., Samlesbury, near Blackburn, Lancs. An insulated steel and aluminium 30ft container went into service last week with haulier J. B. Smith Ltd., Keynsham, Bristol, for operational assessment on transport contracts with J. S. Fry and Son Ltd., the chocolate manufacturers.
A weight of only 2.5 tons has been achieved for the basic Samlesbury insulated container by using steel only for the perimeter frame. Intermediate framing is of aluminiumalloy extrusions. Both internal and external panels are normally of aluminium, although the exterior panelling is in 4ft 6in. widths of a special high-tensile corrugated sheet developed for container panelling by Alcan Industries Ltd.
Polyurethane insulation is used throughout. For the sides it is 2in. thick, for the front and rear 3in. thick and for the roof and floor 4th.. thick.
