HEARING was concluded in Leeds recently in the case in which four drivers were summoned for damaging gates at the premises of Messrs. Thomas W. Nightingale, Leeds hauliers, Three Road Haulage Executive officials were also charged with aiding and abetting and, like the drivers, pleaded not guilty.

Mr. P. S. Price, prosecuting, said that Messrs. Nightingale were due to be taken over by the R.H.E. on March 15, but prices for the vehicles had not been settled. It had been decided to leave the matter until April 11. On April 12 the gates of the premises were opened by the drivers and two lorries driven out before the foreman could close the gates again. The gates were then lifted off their hinges and the other vehicles, taken away.

The magistrate, Mr. R. Sykes, said that the defendants had acted precipitately, but he was satisfied that there was no excessive violence. The drivers were discharged absolutely and each official was fined 40s.
