Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T"principal Mercedes-Benz models ase a four-wheeler for 6-ton loads and a rigid four-wheel-drive six-wheeler for loads of 10-12-tons. Both are equipped with six-eylindered oil engines of 85 b.h.p.

One of the L5 Super four-wheeled chassis complete with the usual form of lorry body and standard enclosed driver's cab is exhibited, this having a wheelbase of 16 ft. 9 ins., and a track of 6 ft. 2 ins. Simplex wheels are fitted suitable for 40-in. by 8-in. or 42-in. by 9-in, pneumatic tyres. Four-wheel brakes in large-diameter drums are applied by the Bosch Dewandre vacuum system.

A similar chassis complete with body but slightly different equipment, also is available for inspection, the body in this case having been built by Samuel Jackson, Ltd., Smallwood, .Sanclhach.

A third chassis of this type, without bodywork, provides visitors with an opportunity for examining the ehassis Layout An exceptional feature of this

particular chassis is that it has a fivespeed gearbox in place of the usual four

? speed unit. This proves satisfactory for most main-road work, and it is being specified more and more by purchasers because the engine speed can be kept down for considerable periods in the course of any ordinary journey.

The NK56 Hercules rigid six-wheeler is a most impressive exhibit. It has a Maybach two-speed auxiliary gearbox giving eight forward speeds, but this is

not a standard component The body has been specially built by the Duramin Engineering Co., Ltd., for the Hay's Wharf Cartage Co., Ltd., to carry 10 tons of fresh beef. Between inner and outer aluminium panelling of the roof, floor, sides and ends is a space of 3 ins, or more, containing Alfol metalfoil insulating material. The carcases are raised to the runway and drawn forward by engine power, so that 10 tons can be loaded or unloaded in an 'hour. The Duramin body weighs 2 tons, representing a tremendous saving on steel and wood construction. It is about 22 ft. long and has an interior height of 8 ft. 6 ins. Single giant pneumatic tyres, 13.5-in. by 20-in., are fitted.

The Mercedes-Benz 0M5S high-speed oil engine is available as a separate exhibit, and some parts are cut away so that it can be properly understood. The model is seen driven by an electric motor and is most interesting.—British Mercedes Benz, Ltd., 111, Grosvenor Road, London. S.W.1. •
