Grant Arnold last appeared in these pages back in 1995, when he had already experienced an all-too-common problem: "Quite early on I had a regular customer called Argosy Fencing which went bump on me. I thought the loss would take me out as well. The experience just made me hungrier for more work and taught me to be more careful.

"I was only running three vehicles at the time, driving one and controlling the other two from a mobile phone bought for me by my uncle. That telephone transformed the business."

In the early days Arnold built his reputation for reliability by taking on jobs that competitors could not guarantee to handle. He had a policy of buying top-quality used trucks; now he has the resources to handle hire-purchase payments on new LGVs.

Twelve years ago, when GA Transport was running 14 vehicles, he used to lease his base; now he owns it. "There is still room for improvement-for growth in our transport and storage, and to balance these with the commercial and residential property,' he explains.
