• The Department of Transport's vehicle maintenance code of practice could signal the end of mileage-based maintenance, predicts South Wales Licensing Authority John Mervyn Pugh.

Speaking at the Tipcon conference he said the code was based on his Welsh system which was used by both new operators and section 69 maintenance offenders.

"The mileage alternative is history," he said. "If an operator goes to outside contractors, these contractors do not know when the maximum mileage is reached. So more often than not, inspections are missed," Instead, the new system will be time-based.
