AND ROLL

We report on a highly successful London-Brighton vintage CV run — from the cab of one of the winning entries

• Tragedy marred an otherwise highly succesful Vintage Commercial Vehicle Run last Sunday, when 14-year-old Alex Hogg from South Croydon fell in front of a 1929 six-tonne Foden steam-powered brewer's dray.

At the time of going to press, Alex was in a critical condition in Cuckfield Hospital in Sussex.

Observers report that Alex, who is a keen vintage vehicle enthusiast, was cycling along the route of the London to Brighton run at Pease Pottage, near Crawley. Witnesses say he stopped at the side of the road to watch the approaching vehicles and overbalanced in front of the Foden.

The accident apart, many of the people taking part in the run said it was one of the best turn-outs in the 25-year history of the event (and not 24 years as stated in last week's CM).

More than 200 vintage commercial vehicles completed the run down to Brighton, and though the day started overcast and grey in Battersea, there was bright sunshine by the time the vehicles arrived at Brighton's Madeira Drive.

The overall winner of the Concours d'Elegance National Benzole Trophy was a 1948 Albion FT3X flat truck, owned by Michael Goulding of Scunthorpe. The Albion was originally specially constructed for DB Cole to transport a helter skelter called 'The Mat', and is now restored to its original form.

Finally, the Charles W Banfield Challenge Cup, awarded to the best restoration during the past year, was won by a 1930s Tilling-Stevens Express Coach, owned and restored over the past 19 years by Chris Newman from Maidstone in Kent. Chris very kindly agreed to take Commercial Motor on this, the first-ever Brighton run for his coach, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris and congratulate him on his win.0
