AN APPEAL by Garelochhead Coach Services Ltd against the decision of the Scottish Traffic Commissioners in granting Salopia Saloon Coaches Ltd a variation of the conditions for a backing of a road service licence for excursions and tours has been dismissed by the Environment Secretary.
The Commissioners had granted with amendment the application of Salopia to vary the backing of road service licences in respect of a tour from Whitchurch to Helensburgh instead of A rrochar. It allowed Salopia to operate only two day excursions in place of four previously operated from Arrochar, The remaining two excursions were to be operated by Garelochhead Coaches.
Garelochhead said that it operated three identical excusions from Helensburgh and had offered to withdraw its objection if its vehicles were used for any two of the tours. Salopia said that this constituted a predatory attitude.
The Secretary's written decision acknowledged the fantail principle of keeping individual journeys from the holiday centre open to the passengers of the principal tour but was not fully persuaded that it was so equally founded in law. In the large resorts. he would question how far local operators were entitled to lay claim to traffic generated by outside operators,
