Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The importance of adequate, clear and concise service literature can never be so great as when the user of a company's products is thousands of miles away.

Language difficulties—and illiteracy in some parts of the world—makes the written word of limited use for giving maintenance or servicing instructions. To combat this problem AB Scania Vabis is carrying its system of pictorial instruction plus short written text a further step along the line by introducing completely pictorial instruction manuals.

Symbols are used instead of words to tell the fitter to unscrew, press, knock out or screw up. There are eight basic symbols in use, accompanied by numerals giving torque settings for studs and bolts, and also designating the appropriate toold for the job in hand.

These operation cards are produced in A4 size (6.5 x 4.5in.) on a glazed-surface paper and are designed to be issued to the fitter doing a particular job with the special tools. Together with the operation cards, which cover the whole of the job in hand and show the sequence to be adopted, goes a series of detailed pictures of each stage of the job.

Scania says that the pictures will serve the same purpose in any part of the world and not only replace 15 to 20 pages of text but also eliminate the need for numerous translations of the master manual. It is also a far quicker task to produce re-vamped information when component parts are modified.

In metric now

A new range of compression couplings and complementary tubing in metric sizes to ISO standards has been developed by Enots Ltd.

Named Doublem, the couplings are available for tubes of 5, B, 12, and 16mm outside diameter and suitable for use at working pressures up to 250 atmospheres depending on the tube size. By September 1968, the range will have been extended upwards to include tube sizes of 22 and 28mm and during the next two years the range of sizes and choice of coupling arrangements will be extended so that the versatility of the Daublem range will then be comparable with that of the Enots Inch range.

It has been primarily designed for use in the construction of pneumatic, lubrication and hydraulic circuits but is suitable for use with any fluid which is compatible with the brass couplings and the copper, nylon and Bundy tubing used.

Noise meter

Bruel and Kjaer Laboratories Ltd. has announced a noise meter, the Type 2207, specifically designed to cater for the requirements of the new MoT noise regulations and to meet British Standard BS.3538 (Part 1). The meter supplements a range of units.

The Type 2207 has a decibel range of 60dBA to 120dBA and a pushbutton controlling sensitivity facilitates noise measurement of a rapidly approaching vehicle without range switching. A leakproof battery gives 10 hours of continuous operation, while a scale on the meter shows the battery condition. For a + 1dB limit of sensitivity the temperature range is — 15deg C to + 60deg C, the overall range being — 25deg C to + 90deg C. It is recommended that the meter is used in conjunction with a B and K piston-phone Type 4220 calibrator which is accurate to + 0.2dB. A NPL calibration certificate is obtainable.

The meter is available in kit form which includes full instructions, windscreen, tripod, calibrator and metric measuring tape.

Made by: Bruel and Kjaer Laboratories Ltd., Cross Lances Road, Hounslow, Middlesex. Price: E110; kit. £130.

Guidance on tipper repairs

A four-page leaflet—Reference ASA/S/1— giving illustrated guidance on tipper maintenance and repairs has been produced by Edbro Ltd. in the interests of safety and efficiency.

A copy will in future be included with the documents issued with every tipping gear sold but it can also be obtained on application to the Edbro service department.

Orbital sander

The Elu MVS.47W/FP orbital sander just introduced into the UK by Trend Industrial Equipment Ltd. is designed and balanced for sanding motor-vehicle bodies and similar shaped surfaces. Suitable for wet or dry sanding operations, it has a thick foam base which conforms to the undulating shapes of bodywork.

Although weighing only 81b, the sander is designed for heavy usage and has a high-speed orbiting action of 8,300 movements per min. Its compact 0.625 tip motor ensures high sanding efficiency even when under exceptional load.

The tool is double insulated for electrical safety and as a further safety factor in wet sanding operations, the base is shrouded in a rubber shield to prevent moisture from entering the vibratory mechanism and working its way up the spindle.

Marketed by: Trend Industrial Equipment Ltd„ 1 Lechmere Road, London, NW2.

Price: £44 14s 4d complete with 10 assorted waterproof sanding sheets and two extra thicknesses of interchangeable spongerubber pad.

Dumpmaster brochure

A brochure giving details of the PD Dumpmaster compaction collector has been published.

The Dumpmaster is available in models with a capacity of up to 81 cu.yd. and payloads of up to 9 tons. The brochure illustrates some of its industrial uses and the cost savings possible with this one-man operated containerized waste-collection system. Information is given on the wide range of containers made for use with the Dumpmaster; it is available free.

Container trailers

A six-page, two-colour leaflet is available from R. Murfitt Ltd. giving full details of the company's range of trailers suitable for the transport of containers. It covers skeletal trailer chassis (SK series) and platform chassis (FPS series) which have lengths of 20ft to 40ft and g.c.w. ratings of 24 tons to 42 tons. Applications of ISO twistlocks, types A. B and C. are described in the leaflet.

Side-and-front loader

A new Matbro fork-lift truck can pick up its load at the front or the side of the machine. When acting as a sideloader the machine can operate in a gangway of 5ft. Sideways reach is 3ft, and lateral traverse when the forks are in the front-loading position is also 3ft. Smaller loads, such as 3ft by 3ft pallets can be slewed to the front or side within the width of the machine, which is 58in.

The standard two-section mast will lift 3,000lb at 18in. centres to a height of 12ft at a rate of 45ft/min. It will also tilt 5deg to the left and traverse 90deg laterally.

Traction and steering are provided by a single rear wheel driven by an hydraulic motor, which is supplied with fluid by a throttlecontrolled variable-displacement pump.

Made by: Matbro (Sales) Ltd., Hodey, Surrey.

Hydrostatic pump /motor

A recently announced series of Lucas axialpiston hydrostatic pump /motor units, the MD250, can be used for inputs up to 28 hp. Three types of unit are included in the range which is supplementary to the Lucas 100 hydrostatic transmission, capable of handling throughputs up to 100 hp, and the PM series having power ratings up to 280 hp.

Operating at a maximum pressure of 3,000 psi. and speed of 3,000 rpm, the MD 250 unit has a maximum torque output of 45 lb.ft. The three types comprise a fixed-capacity constant-displacement unit, a manually operated variable-displacement version and a pressure-compensated unit. Automatic pressure compensation provides a constant pressure output over the full flaw range without the use of a relief valve which obviates excessive power loss and overheating.

Identical basic units can be used as either pump or motor and this feature' allows the standard unit to be employed as a variablestroke motor in transmission systems. Combinations of fixed and variable-displacement units can be used in transmission applications having throughputs up to 28 hp.
