Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

standard by lain Sherriff

• The Met man at Turnhouse told me that 23+mm of water had fallen in the area last Sunday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. During that time, I had stood through the Dunfermline LDOY competition and I can endorse the official measurement.

The volunteers who marshalled the event never left their posts and, all credit to the marshals, no one protested about scores; a wonderful achievement.

It would not have been surprising if the enthusiasm of the 90 competitors had waned during the downpour, but they and some 500 spectators were still there at the end. This interest was maintained because the committee kept in doubt the identity of the winners of the four principal awards till the end.

There has been criticism from time to time that there is too much emphasis put on the results of the 'manoeuvring test. The special award for Highway Code and Road Section—introduced at Dunfermline for the first time—goes a long way to answering the criticism. It was won this year by J. Ronaldson of the Scottish Gas Board, Edinburgh, who has set an unbeatable standard for the future. He did not lose a point. Only one Dunfermline competitor will be returning to the final this year. He is C. Symon, Dunfermline Corporation, who won in Class A and also collected the TRTA Cup. However, his team which has held the team cup at this event for three years, lost their grip and let it go to the Ministry of Public Building and Works who are also holders of the Edinburgh team cup.

The MPBW will be represented at Brarncote by R. Grocock and A. Butchart, but spare a thought for R. Anderson of Walker Bros. (Cowdenbeath) Ltd. He tied with Mr. Butchart for first place in Class D with 74 penalty points, and where a tie occurs the Highway Code and Road Section results are used to find the winner. The Highway Code results for both men were equal but at the last hurdle, Mr. Anderson was toppled; he lost by three points on the Road Section. His hard luck did not stop there—if his side-capes had been 2in. higher, he would have made the final under the regulation for large classes. There's more to come; I understand he normally operates with sidecape extensions—but not last Sunday. He had the consolation of winning the Regent Cup.
