AFTER an application by Gilbraith Tankers Ltd. had been amended. British Railways and British Road Services, who originally objected, expressed themselves satisfied at Lytham St. Annes last Tuesday. At the outset the applicants asked for six new A-licensed tankers but later said they were willing to reduce this to three.

Mr. G. S. Wesson, transport superintendent of the Esso Petroleum Co. Ltd., said that the trade in fuel oil, particularly for heating purposes, was a rapidly increasing one. The company would like to employ the three new vehicles if they were available. Evidence was also given on behalf of Gulf Oil, Tar Residuals, and Lancashire Tar Distillers.

Representing the North Western Licensing Authority, Mr. J. Gazda granted two new tankers, but described the application as inflated. It was clear that since the end of 1961 there had been a large increase in the Gilbraith business but some of this must be attributed to the number of Contract A vehicles. If there was such a tremendous increase in their businesses companies such as Esso Petroleum and Gulf Oil would deal with it by obtaining extra Contract A units.
