C.O.G.5 BUS CHASSIS

Reviewing the Daimler C.O.G.5 Chassis in the February issue of "Bus & Coach," P. NI. Sanders, M.I.Mech.E., M.Inst.T., quotes the opinions of several well-known Municipal Transport Managers, and for convincing proof of the claims.we make for the economy and reliability of this outstanding chassis, we can do no better than reprint extracts from these unbiased reports below :— "Mr. Witcomb Smith, A.M.I.A.E.,_general manager of the West Bromwich Transport Department, tells me that he had a 48-seater in service from May 25th to September 8th, 1934, during which period it covered 9,946.82 miles and consumed 895 gallons

of fuel, or an average of 11.11 m.p.g. The oil consumption averaged 1,624 m.p.g. An other

48-seater was put in service on November 9th, and up to date has covered 4,598.64 miles, consuming 440 gallons of fuel, averaging 10.45 m.p.g., the oil averaging 1,839 m.p.g.'

"Equally satisfactory has been the experience of the Stockton Transport Department which placed one of these chassis on one of the busiest town routes on September 1st last. Since then, the general manager, Mr. W. M. Campbell, A.M.Inst.T., tells me it has covered 15,000 miles entirely free from trouble. The consumption of fuel, of superior quality, works out at 11.25 m.p.g. Considerable improvement in this respect was effected by blanking up three parts of the radiator front, thus maintaining an engine temperature of from 180 to 185 deg. Fahr. (A radiator muff with stud fasteners is now a standard fitting.) Lubricating oil consumption has so far worked out to 2,700 m.p.g."

"Four Daimler buses have been working in the service of the South Shields Transport Department since October lst. Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, the

general manager, haskindly supplied me with copies of the maintenance Record sheets. The vehicles are 32-seater single-deckers, and the average fuel consumption varies between 11.79 m.p.g. over a mileage of 10,002.62 and 1255 m.p.g. over 11,420.21 miles. No a:.1 is used between the times when it is changed in the sumps, the latter being drained every 3,000 miles."

"Excellent performance is credited to a bus which has run 4,000 miles over rather hilly roads in the service of the Transport Department of the Aberdare U.D.C. The general manager, Mr. W. E. Richardson, AM.LE.E., A.M.Inst.T., gives the fuel consumption at 10.5 m.p.g. No lubricating oil, he says, has been used in addition to that supplied with the vehicle."
