• Objections from Kiridees Metropolitan District Council and local residents have prevented R J Tait & Son from increasing the number of vehicles on its licence.
The Huddersfield-based company had applied to North Eastern Deputy Licensing Authority Brian Homer to renew its national licence for 12 vehicles and one trailer — an increase of five vehicles and one trailer. That application was opposed by the council, and there were representations on environmental grounds from four local residents.
Managing director Robert Tait gave evidence that the additional vehicles were re
quired to handle extra work for a major customer, but the council and the residents maintained that the operating centre, at Chapel Street, Taylor Hill, was incapable of accommodating more than the existing number of vehicles.
Homer renewed the licence in respect of seven vehicles only, with conditions prohibiting vehicles from being reversed out of the operating centre, and from being parked in the surrounding area.
Tait indicated that he would seek to vary the licence by applying for an additional operating centre for the five vehicles and one trailer at nearby premises used by Nabisco.
