TYNE AND WEAR hauliers will learn this weekend whether any of their drivers plan to take industrial action in pursuit of higher wage settlements.

A 50p gap remains between the Transport and General Workers Union and Road Haulage Association members in the area over the basic rate for drivers of 32.5 tonne lorries.

The employers' last offer was a £4.50 increase (to £92.50), but they are prepared to raise this to £5 if the union resists alleged national pressure to stick to a £5.50 demand.
