MANAGING director Barry Wild said his organization conceived the idea long before the Industrial Training Act was on the statute book. For too long people had been prone to think of drivers as labourers at the wheel, but Wood's school for advanced driver training aimed to raise the stature of its men. Initially there would be six men on a course so that they would get highly personal attention. The syllabus included accident prevention, engineering aspects and the handling of dangerous liquids. Wood operated 765 tankers and all its drivers would have the opportunity of taking the course. For new men a satisfactory pass-out would be a condition of continued employment.
