ADRIVE to persuade motorists to use public
transport is to be made by the Northern region Passenger Transport Co-ordination Committee, said its chairman, Sir James Steel, at its first meeting.
The number of cars on Britain's roads were expected to double by 1980, he said, and unless passengers were moved from cars to public transport, road congestion would get out of hand. It was hoped to achieve the swing by co-operation, rather than by coercion.
Three working parties have been set up by the committee—to investigate complaints from the public about transport, seek locations for newtype bus stations near railway stations and to set up test areas where co-ordination of all forms of transport can be tried out.
