SIR HENRI' SpuRRIER, chairman and managing director of Leyland Motors, Ltd., and MR. D. G. STOKES, Leyland's sales director and managing director of Scammell Lorries, Ltd., left for Johannesburg last Saturday to start an extended business trip through South, Central and East Africa. The trip is expected to occupy four weeks. SrAcEv has left the export division of Leyland Motors, Ltd., London, to become sales manager, Natal. MR. STANLEY MARKLAND has been appointed deputy managing director of Leyland Motors, Ltd. I4e will continue as works director of Leyland Motors, Ltd.. and managing director of Albion Motors, Ltd. Mr. Markland joined Leyland Motors, Ltd., as a trade apprentice in 1920 and obtained in 1921 the first engineering scholarship to be granted by the company. He joined the board of Leyland Motors, Ltd.. in 1946 and became works director in 1953. MR. WALTER WEST. who _previously held the positions of Leyland's deputy chairman and managing director_ continues to hold the appointment of deputy chairman to the board.

MR. C. W. WARD, director and general manager of Park Ward and Co., Ltd., has been elected president of the Royal Automobile Club in succession to MR. E. P. CONNOLLy, director of Connolly Bros. (Curlers). Ltd., who now becomes immediate past president. MR. D. G, NonrnAnt, deploy chairman and joint managing director of A. W. Chapman, Ltd., has been elected honorary treasurer.

MR. H. JEFFRIEs is retiring as transpor; manager of the Newcastle Co-operative Society after 49 years' service.

SIR GRAHAM CUNNINGHAM, chairman of Triplex Holdings, Ltd., and of Triplex Safety Glass Co., Ltd., has been appointed a member of the five-mar Royal Commission on the Press.

MR. WALLACE CLARK has been promoted shipping and traffic manager, F. Perkins, Ltd., Peterborough, and has been succeeded as assistant company secretary by MR. HUGH JOHN WyNNF, MR. Roy M. WILSON, Q.C., has accepted the chairmanship of the Railway Staff National Tribunal in succession to SIR RONALD MORISON, Q.C., who has relinquished that office owing to pressure of other commitments, MR. ALICK Dick, chairman and managing director, Standard Motor Co., Ltd.. is to give the Wakefield Memorial Lecture to the College of Aeronautical and Automobile Engineering, in London on May /9.

MR, C. P. GORMUN. accountant of the North Western division of British Road Services, has been appointed divisional accountant of Pickfords Division in succession to MR. R. SEmpLE, who is retiring on July 1.
