Big Six-cylindered Engines

IN connection with the engines made by the Hercules Motors Corporation, of Canton, Ohio, which are marketed in this country by Automotive Products Co., Brock House, Laugh= Street, London, W.1, it is

any of the units hitherto offered, is now available.

The range comprises two series, the GX-type having a 5i-in. stroke and the HX-type having a 6-in. stroke. In each series the bores available are 4i ins., 5 ins., 5f ins., 5i ins, and 5i ins.

In producing this range some neivfeatures have been incorporated. The cylinders are DOW cast in two blocks of three, the heads being removable and so designed as to accommodate two sets of sparking plugs should dual ignition be desired. The crankcase, a separate casting, is supplied either in grey iron or in aluminium alloy. Downdraught induction manifolds are fitted, unless up-draught carburetters are particularly required. Exhaust manifolds are of either the centre-outlet or the rear-outlet type, and in the former case the discharge may be either upward or downward. Alr cleaners are fitted and a proportion of the induction gas is taken from the crankcase. An interesting feature is that the big-end bearing studs are integral with the connecting rods, the object being to bring the studs closer to the bearing centres.

A. large-capacity gear-driven oil pump is fitted, with a double-mavenlug pump, arrangement, which ensures adequate oil supply, even should the engine be inclined to a marked degree. Provision is made for an oil purifier and for fuel-pump drive.

Either three-point or four-point support is available, and there is a choice of several bell housings. If required, both battery and magneto ignition units can be fitted. Seven-bearing crankshafts are standardized, as with the other Hercules models, but the new range has eight-bearing camshafts.

General features of the Hercules engines are the location of the carburetter, dynamo, starter, valves and exhaust manifold on the off side of the engine, and the placing of the water pump, distributor drive, magneto, oil gauge, filter and Eller on the near side.

A feature of Hercules engines in general is that the cylinder-block construction is such that the water jackets are extended nearly to the base of the cylinders. Another point is that white metal is'poured directly into grooved connecting,-rod ends, the claim of the designers being that this prevents an oil Elm between the connecting rod and the bearing back, and so permits, better dissipation of heat. Apart from this fact, it reduces the weight.

Interest attaches to a special type of Hercules. engine developed for the Twin Coach CorPoration, of Kent, Ohio. The refinements embodied may be specified for engines required for service in this cOuntry, and include a separate aluminium crankcase, a cylinder-block casting of nickel-chrome alloy instead of iron, a built-in A.G. fuel pump, and induction from the crankcase..

The four-cylindered models range in .bore and stroke from 21 ins. by 44 ins.. 'to 61 ins. by 7, ins., and the junior sixcylindered types range from 31 ins. by 41 ins. to 41 ins, by 4i ins.
