Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Leyland Daf has unveiled its Euro-1 engine line-up for the 17tonne 60 Series (Freighter) and the lighter 45 Series, which also gets a retrinuned interior.

The 60 Series takes the 6.2-litre Daf straight-six, less than three months after the troubled Dutch manufacturer announced plans to drop it.

The 60 Series middleweight chassis will still be offered with two power ratings (see table) but both engines are charge-cooleduntil now only the most powerful 60-210 model has been chargecooled.

Production of the fast lowemission 60 Series trucks has begun at the Leyland assembly plant, ready for delivery well ahead of the 1 October Euro-1 deadline. According to Leyland Daf there will be: "No price increase specific to Euro-1", but all Leyland Dal prices rose by 3°. on 1 June.

To meet the Euro-1 standard Daf has made a number of modifications to the 62-litre lump including retarding the injection, raising injection pressures and fitting six-hole injectors (the nonEuro-1 engines had four-hole injectors). The new engines also have improved cylinder head clamping, revised inlet ports and re-entrant combustion bowl pistons

Leyland Daf says that with the reduction in peak temperatures and pressures, due to the shorter time between injection and ignition, the latest Euro-1 diesels are "smoother engines".

Power output for both engines remains 133 and 156kW (178 and 209hp) but peak torque has been raised by 2% on the NS1331, and by 10% on the NS156L at lower revs.

After initially declaring its intention to switch to an outside engine maker Daf is sticking with its in-house diesel, which it says is utpable of meeting the F,uro-2 standard due in 1996. However the company may yet change its mind again (see Vehicle News, page 8).

Following the launch of the Eindhoven-built 65 Series 17-tonner at Brussels earlier this year Leyland Daf says right-handdrive 65s will appear in the last quarter of this year. But it stresses that while 65 replaces the old Daf 1900 middleweight, "it is highly unlikely that the 65 will supersede the 60 Series". Instead the two trucks are expected to be sold alongside each other.

According to Leyland Daf there is a "growing interest" in specifying the 75 and 85 Series rigids for drawbar operation. The company says: "We now have a very comprehensive range of 17-tonnes." 7 Leyland Daf will launch a revised version of its factory-fitted 60 Series municipal crew-cab at the TWM show in Torbay next week.

The new cab has a more vertical rear wall, providing more space inside and better seating. The municipal has 590nun more headroom than a standard sleeper cab.
