Their Application to Conner Car Lorries Recently Delivered to Northern Users.

CONSIDERABLE numbers.' of grocers ‘-‘4 and drysalters are to be found amongst the customers for new vehicles, and herewith we reproduce illustrations of three Commer Car lorrieshi 1 have

_aye been delivered during recent weeks from the depot of Messrs. Grace and Sutcliffe, of Keighley, the West Yorkshire agents for Commer Cars, Ltd. The vehicles have been delivered to R. S. Dyson and Co., Ltd. 'Wholesale Grocers, Albert. Yard, Hi;ddersfield; G. L. Greenwood and Co., Ltd., wholesale druggists and drysalters, Keighley; and Stephenson Brothers, Ltd., drysalters, etc., Bradford.

In these trades there is aspecial demand for arrangements to be made for the carrying of a heterogeneous collection of parcels, bottles, boxes, and other articles of varying shapes, sizes and weights. As the loads are distributed at a number of places in a day's journey ease in reachingainy part of the •platform of the lorry almost entirely precludes the use of sideboards, and, in. consequence, Messrs. Grace and Sutcliffe recommend their customers to adopt what are known as "box ends." These

are panelled sections which reach to the height of the driver's cab, and are joined by bars at the top. Over the whole can be hung waterproof sheets which totally enclose the platform of the lorry.

In this manner what is practically a closed van can be‘made, but the vehicle has the additional advantage that the load on the platform can be reached from either side, or itheadriver is able to get in at the topby lifting the waterproof sheet. In the case of Messrs. Dysons' vehicle the box-end arrangement is adopted at both ends, but in Messrs. Stepliens.ons' case it is only adopted for the front end, the sheet bars being supported by posts at the rear. The bass supporting-the sheets are made flush with the panelled portions, and by this means the sheets fit neatly against the woodwork, not only down the sides but at the angle near the bar. -In this way lain is prevented from driving in, and the load is kept weatherproof. The boxend gives good protection from weather and dust at the fore end, while in the corners thus formed inside the wagon a large quantity of parcels, etc., can be piled. The fixing of the longitudinal bars flush with the sides allows the sheet to hang neatly, thereby preventing undue wear through creasing. Only in the case of Messrs. Greenwood's lorry are the side panels done away with, but in this case a high backboard is provided, and parcels can be piled against this.

In cases 'there valuable goods, which might easily be spoilt by the entrance of rain, have to be dealt with, there seems to be no reasonwhy the side curtains should not be replaced by a number of lightlymade sections, each hinged from the top rail and with some form of .clipfastener at the bottom. The se,?.tions could be constructed inexpensively as light frameworkecovered with canvas.
