We like the NP300 for its honest, solid engineering, expunging the need for 'Fancy Dan' extras such as leather seats complete with integrated foot-spa.
You can take it off the road and on to the rough stuff for a good kicking and not worry that it going to get scratched or dented, because you feel that it wants to be abused anyway.
At its core is a sound engine that surprised us with its ability, enabling Nissan to make steady progress; its also well built and simple to operate, giving it an honest, workman-like feel.
Its OK on the road, with a modicum of caution, but on rough terrain, it certainly doesn't disappoint.
However, the NP300 is also dated in several areas. Its chassis lacks the refinement of the next generation, and the cabin while functional enough is instantly disagreeable thanks to the static bench and its tack of space and storage.
This could all be redeemed if Nissan dropped the price, making it a genuine bargain and giving the NP300 a key setting point it currently doesn't have.
