recent years laying so many fine family firms low, it is a pleasure to learn of an operator celebrating its centenary and continuing to thrive in business and as part of its local
community. Such is the story of Bassetts, based at Tittensor near Stoke-on-Trent which qualifies for a Royal telegram this year.
To celebrate the event a hardback publication, Bassetts of 7ittensor-100 Years of Transport has been published by Nynehead Books. It traces the company's early years through to its expansion into long-distance haulage, telling along the way the story of Bassett Coachways and the Reg Bassett Orchestra.

The latter was a venture started by Reg, father of the current joint managing directors, Len and Ashley Bassett, and was by all accounts a very successful dance band which began its career in the 1940s after winning the Melody Maker Dance Band Championship in Derbyshire in 1946.
The book is fully illustrated throughout and will make a hand some addition to the library of any haulage enthusiast. At .C19.95 for fewer than 200 pages its a tad expensive, however. So get your loved ones to buy it for your next birthday, if you can wait that long. I'm taking my copy down the Pig & Calculator to peruse over a leisurely pint and a pipe.
