Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Supplied by the Ministry of War Transport and the Hauliers' National Traffic Pool, to keep the industry informed of developments, but not necessarily to Lle regarded as official pronouncements CARGO.--The total meat and' general cargo moved in the week ended June 19 was 130,900 tons (livestock and scrap excluded). This compared with 127,400 tons in the previous week.

Qurct WORK.—A recent movement carried out by the Meat and Livestock Section provides a good example of the advantages of a centrally controlled fleet. •Orders had been received for the movement of some hundreds of tons of meat from a west-coast port, but at the last minute the allocation to road transport was increased by a substantial amount. Additional vehicles were diverted from other parts of the country and during the period of the movement the loads averaged 1,000 tons a day, most of which was moved at 48 hours' notice or less. Although sudden demands of this kind are by no means uncommon, it is felt that on this occasion all concerned—vehicle operators, port committees and H.Q. operating staff—are entitled to give themselves a pat on the back" for a particularly effective piece of team work.

FOR CHARTER.—The number of vehicles offered for charter increased last week by 73 to 3,433. Of this total 1,706 are listed as " possibles."

NATIONAL POOL.—Applications for registration with the Hauliers' National Traffic Pool, after falling off for some months, are tending to come in more rapidly. The number of concerns registered is now abont 4,000. In addition, some 450 concerns have applied for appointment as sub agents.

DEFENCE LINES.—Recruiting for the Defence Lines, during the week ended June 20, appears to have met with particular success sin the Midland and South Western Regions. These regions together raised a further 200 vehicles. Contributions from other regions brought the total for the week to 416. The grand total for the whole country, since the start of the scheme, is 35,800.
