ALEX SMILES, the founder of Sunderland waste recycling logistics firm Alex Smiles, died over Christmas.
He formed the business in 1973 with his wife Jane, and the company has grown to employ more than 70 people, operating with a fleet of 40 trucks, including skip wagons, tippers and artics.
He was a strong supporter of the Road Haulage Association (RHA) and served on the RHA Northern Regional Council. "He was a keen supporter of the RHA's Regional Council and Waste Management Group, and made significant contributions. He will be missed, and our condolences go to all of his friends, family and colleagues," said RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning.
A funeral will be conducted at llam on Friday 11 January at St John's Methodist Church, Ashbrooke, Sunderland.
