GEORGE SWAIN, who ran Kent haulier R Swain & Sons between 1946 and 1980, died on 28 December aged 92.
Swain, father to MD Bob Swain, had remained involved with the firm after handing the business over to his son, attending the monthly directors board meetings up until the latter part of 2012.
His father Harry had formed the business as a means of transporting apples his family grew to London for sale. It moved from a single horse and cart in 1918, to an MoD contractor in the Second World War, to the 240 vehicles and 400 employees the company has today.
In an announcement to staff, Bob said: "While we are all sad about George's death, we should remember all the good times. He was a man of few words, but throughout his life he always had time to help or listen to anyone. He set standards and examples few will achieve."
George is survived by his wife Rita, his four children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
