CUMBRIAN POLICE have been issuing remote vehicle alarms to truck drivers at truckstops and motorway service areas in a bid to reduce vehicle crime.
The initiative is funded by the government through the Carlisle and Eden Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. So far 45 alarms have been handed out to regular users of several stopping points in the county Claire Stevens, crime prevention officer with Cumbria Constabulary, says the original intention was to lend the alarms to drivers at the overnight parking sites so different trucks could use them each night.
But she adds:-We soon decided that this wouldn't be practical so we've given them to drivers who regularly use the same stops. I don't see any reason why we shouldn't get funding for more if this is thought to be a success."
The alarms emit a 95(IB(A) siren that can be heard more than 200m away.
