by Dominic Perry re police forces are appealing r witnesses to a pair of otorway smashes over the iristmas period which left two topic dead. Lancashire Constabulary would like to speak to any drivers who saw a pile-up on the M6 near Leyland at 06:40hrs on Friday 21 December 2001, causing 20-mile tailbacks. The collision involved a Scania tractive unit pulling a curtainsided trailer which was travelling south when it crossed over the central safety barrier.

The Scania then collided with a northbound (RE tanker loaded with sulphuric acid, finally coming to rest at 90' across the northbound carriageway where a saloon car ploughed into it.

According to the police it is thought that immediately prior to the accident the Scania was wandering about the southbound carriageway. The driver of the Scania was pronounced dead at the scene.

• The Central Motorways Police Group in the West Midlands is also hoping that the driver of a truck captured

on CCTV footage may be able to shed some light on a car crash in which a four-year-old child died.

A Renault Laguna attempted to leave the M42 at Junction 3 (Redditch) on Saturday 29 December at around 1950hrs, but collided with the concrete barrier that separates the slip road from the main carriageway and then burst into flames after its fuel tank ruptured.

Police would like to speak to the driver of a light coloured artic seen on CCTV cameras just behind the Renault.

They believe that the car may have swerved across the front of the truck in a bid to make the turn onto the sliproad.
