• Industrial action at Exel Tradeteam was avoided at the last minute as the company agreed to meet shop stewards from the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G). The drivers, on contract to deliver beer for Bass, were in dispute over pay and safety issues and the company's refusal to meet with the union. With the union's support the dri vers had refused to work overtime, refused to work "unreasonable daily hours", and refused to work more than four days per week until the dispute was resolved.

The action, which would have had a huge impact on Exers Christmas deliveries, was averted at the eleventh hour as Exel agreed to meet shop stewards.

T&G regional officer Phil Barley says: "I am awaiting the shop stewards' report early next week, and there will be local level meetings with the company later this week. I expect further repercussions with this company, and we will not rule out industrial action."

Barley had previously claimed that he had been "black-balled" from the Tradeteam depots at Hams Hall. Burton, Wolverhampton and Stoke-on-Trent for the past two years.
