• Full-size buses have come out top with young mothers and pensioners in a survey commissioned by Yorkshire Rider, following its takeover of three bus companies in York last year.
Passengers who were becoming used to minibuses said they felt safer on larger, single and double-deckers, and appreciated the extra space for shopping bags and children.
Researchers found that passengers felt the larger vehicles ran more smoothly round cor ners and offered more space to stand in and more substantial rails to hold on to.
They were happy to trade a high-frequency minibus service for a lower frequency service with conventional vehicles. The survey found that minibuses were often full and were seen as less reliable_ Rider (York) has already replaced a substantial part of its inherited minibus fleet with conventional buses and further conversions are planned this month.
